What We Do

Tree pruning is the selective removal of branches to improve a tree's health, shape, and safety. Unlike full removal, pruning keeps the tree while addressing problems like dead wood, crossing branches, poor structure, or growth that's blocking light or threatening buildings.

We carry out formative pruning on young trees to develop strong structure, maintenance pruning on mature specimens to keep them healthy and balanced, and remedial work on neglected or overgrown trees to restore shape and reduce risk. Every cut is planned to encourage proper wound response and future growth patterns.

All work follows British Standard BS3998, which sets out best practice for tree care. We assess each tree before making any cuts, looking at health, structure, and growth patterns, then remove only what's needed to achieve your goals while keeping the tree vigorous. Cuts are made at the correct angle and position to promote healing, and all debris is cleared and taken to licensed facilities.

Whether you need a garden tree tidied for better light, branches lifted away from a roof, or deadwood removed for safety, we adapt our approach to the tree's species, age, and condition.

Why Choose T. Howie Tree Specialist

City & Guilds NPTC Qualified

Our team holds full City & Guilds NPTC qualifications in tree climbing, chainsaw use, and aerial rescue. We work to BS3998 - the British Standard for tree work; ensuring every cut is made correctly to protect tree health and promote proper healing.

Over 15 Years' Local Experience

Based in Harrogate since 2012, we've pruned hundreds of trees across residential gardens and commercial sites. We understand local species, oak, ash, beech, birch, conifers; and how they respond to pruning at different times of year. That experience means we can spot problems early and recommend the right approach.

Tree Health First

We never over-prune. Removing too much foliage stresses a tree and leaves it vulnerable to disease and dieback. Our cuts are selective, targeted, and always made with the tree's long-term health in mind. If a tree doesn't need pruning, we'll tell you.

When Trees Need Pruning

Deadwood & Diseased Branches

Dead branches become brittle and can fall without warning, particularly dangerous over gardens, driveways, or where people walk. Diseased wood (ash dieback, bracket fungus, bacterial canker) spreads if left unchecked. Regular deadwood removal keeps trees safe and stops infections progressing.

Poor Structure or Crossing Branches

Young trees benefit from formative pruning to develop strong framework. We remove competing leaders, badly angled branches, and crossing limbs that rub together and create wounds. Mature trees sometimes develop weak forks or unbalanced canopies, selective pruning corrects these before they become failures.

Blocking Light or Views

Dense canopies cast heavy shade, making gardens gloomy and preventing grass or plants growing underneath. Selective thinning opens the canopy, letting dappled light through without harming the tree. We can also lift lower branches to create clearance and improve views.

Clearance from Buildings

Branches touching roofs damage tiles and gutters, and leaves block drainage. Trees near windows reduce light and sometimes affect foundations if roots follow moisture under buildings. We prune branches back to safe clearances while maintaining the tree's natural shape.

Overgrown or Neglected Trees

Trees left unpruned for years can become unbalanced, top-heavy, or crowded with weak growth. Remedial pruning gradually restores shape and vigour over 2-3 seasons; never cutting back heavily in one go, which causes stress and epicormic growth (water shoots).

Seasonal Maintenance

Most trees benefit from light pruning every 3-5 years to remove deadwood, thin crowded areas, and maintain shape. Fruit trees need annual pruning to encourage fruiting wood. Regular attention keeps trees healthy and avoids major corrective work later.

Permissions & Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Permissions & Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Some trees in are protected by Tree Preservation Orders, and any tree in a Conservation Area requires permission before removal, even if there's no TPO. Felling a protected tree without permission can lead to fines up to £20,000.

Before we quote for any tree work, we check the local authority register for TPOs and Conservation Area boundaries. If your tree is protected, we'll advise on the process, help with the application, and wait for approval before starting work (usually 6-8 weeks from submission).

Types of Tree Pruning We Offer

Formative Pruning (Young Trees)

Formative Pruning (Young Trees)

Shaping trees during their first 5-10 years establishes strong structure and reduces future problems. We remove competing leaders, encourage well-spaced branching, and correct poor angles early when cuts are small and heal quickly.

Maintenance Pruning (Mature Trees)

Maintenance Pruning (Mature Trees)

Regular light work to keep established trees healthy: deadwood removal, thinning crowded areas, maintaining shape, and addressing minor defects before they worsen. Typically every 3-5 years depending on species and growth rate.

Crown Cleaning (Deadwood Removal)

Crown Cleaning (Deadwood Removal)

Removing all dead, dying, diseased, and broken branches from throughout the crown. Improves safety, reduces disease spread, and tidies the tree's appearance. Essential for trees over paths, driveways, or near buildings.

Structural Pruning (Remedial Work)

Structural Pruning (Remedial Work)

When to Prune Trees

We'll advise on optimal timing when we quote, sometimes urgent deadwood removal can't wait for the perfect season, but we'll minimise stress where possible.

Winter Pruning (November–March)

Summer Pruning (July–August)

Avoid Spring (April–June)

How it works

  1. Free Site Visit & Quote

Call or message us with basic details. We'll arrange a visit to assess the tree, discuss your concerns, and explain what we recommend. Written quote provided within a few days.

  1. Work Scheduled at Best Time

We'll agree timing based on species, tree health, and season, usually winter for most trees. If it's urgent (deadwood over a path, branches on a roof), we can work sooner with appropriate precautions.

  1. Safe Pruning & Complete Clearance

We arrive on time with the right equipment, prune the tree carefully following BS3998 standards, chip all brash, remove timber, and leave your garden tidy. Most pruning jobs are completed in a day.
