What We Do

Crown thinning means carefully removing selected branches throughout a tree's canopy to reduce its density while keeping its natural shape. This lets more light and air pass through without changing the tree's size or outline. We remove crossing branches, dead wood, and weak growth typically reducing the leaf area by 10-30% depending on the tree's condition and your needs.

Crown lifting involves removing the lower branches to raise the canopy height, creating clearance underneath for paths, driveways, garden access, or simply to stop branches touching roofs, fences, or blocking views. We cut branches back to the main trunk following British Standards, leaving clean wounds that heal naturally.

Both techniques keep trees healthy while solving common garden problems too much shade, limited access, or branches interfering with buildings. They're often done together: thinning the canopy to let light through while lifting the lower branches for clearance below.

We work to BS3998 standards, check for Tree Preservation Orders before quoting, and only remove what's necessary to achieve your goal without compromising the tree's health or structure.

Why Choose T. Howie Tree Specialist

City & Guilds NPTC Qualified

Our team holds full City & Guilds NPTC qualifications in tree climbing, pruning, and aerial work. We work to BS3998, the British Standard that specifically prohibits harmful practices like topping and defines proper crown reduction techniques. Every cut is made correctly to protect tree health and ensure proper wound closure.

Over 15 Years' Local Experience

Based in Harrogate since 2012 and being the highest rated, we've worked on hundreds of trees across gardens, estates, and commercial sites throughout North Yorkshire. We understand local tree species oaks, ashes, sycamores, limes and how they respond to different pruning techniques. That experience means we know exactly how much to remove without stressing the tree.

Natural Shape Maintained

Good crown work shouldn't be obvious. When we've finished, your tree should look natural just lighter, clearer, or with better access underneath. Reviews consistently mention how tidy we leave sites and how natural the trees look afterward. We remove all cut branches and debris as standard.

When You Need Crown Thinning

Letting More Light Through

Dense canopies especially on mature oaks, limes, and sycamores can cast heavy shade over gardens, lawns, or patios. Thinning the crown by 15-25% lets dappled light through without drastically changing the tree's appearance. Grass grows better underneath, plants get enough light, and rooms facing the tree feel brighter.

Improving Airflow

Trees with dense, congested crowns are more vulnerable to wind damage. Heavy foliage acts like a sail, catching wind and putting strain on branches and the trunk. Thinning reduces wind resistance while maintaining the tree's natural form particularly useful for tall trees near buildings or in exposed positions.

Common Trees We Thin:

Oak – Often develop very dense crowns as they mature

Lime – Notorious for heavy shade and congested growth

Sycamore – Fast-growing with thick canopies

Ash – Can become very dense, particularly in sheltered spots

Beech – Dense foliage that blocks significant light

When You Need Crown Lifting

Creating Access Underneath

Low-hanging branches can make it difficult to walk under trees, mow lawns, or use garden areas. Lifting the crown to 2-3 metres gives comfortable clearance for pedestrians, while lifting to 5+ metres allows vehicle access or opens up driveways and parking areas.

Clearance for Buildings

Branches touching or overhanging roofs can damage tiles, block gutters, and drop leaves into valleys. They also provide access routes for squirrels into lofts. Lifting the crown creates a safe gap between the tree and your property typically 1-2 metres minimum.

After Storm Damage

When storms break major branches or split the crown, the tree becomes unbalanced and heavy on one side. Crown reduction can rebalance the tree, reduce weight on damaged areas, and restore a more stable structure.

Common Trees We Lift:

Oak – Often have low, spreading branches

Lime – Commonly planted near roads and paths

Hornbeam – Dense lower growth that benefits from lifting

Willow – Weeping varieties often need lifting for access

Conifers (e.g., Pine, Spruce) – Lower branches die naturally but need removing

Crown Thinning & Lifting Together

Crown Thinning & Lifting Together

Many customers ask for both services on the same tree and it makes sense:

  • Thin the crown to let light through from above

  • Lift the canopy to let light in from below and create access

For example, a large oak shading your garden: we thin the crown to reduce shade by 20-25%, then lift the lower branches to 2.5 metres so you can walk underneath comfortably. The tree stays healthy, you get more light, and the garden becomes usable again.

We plan the work carefully to avoid removing too much in one session. If a tree needs significant thinning and lifting, we may recommend phased work over two seasons to avoid stressing it.

Before we quote for any tree work, we check the local authority register for TPOs and Conservation Area boundaries. If your tree is protected, we'll advise on the process, help with the application, and wait for approval before starting work (usually 6-8 weeks from submission).

Some trees in are protected by Tree Preservation Orders, and any tree in a Conservation Area requires permission before removal, even if there's no TPO. Felling a protected tree without permission can lead to fines up to £20,000.

What's Included in Our Service

Every crown thinning or lifting job includes:

Site Assessment & Planning

We visit your property to assess the tree, check its health, measure the canopy, and discuss exactly what you want to achieve. We'll explain what's realistic and safe, and show you (from the ground) which branches we'd remove.

Complete Waste Removal

All cut branches, twigs, and debris are removed from site and taken to licensed waste facilities. We don't leave piles of brash "for composting" it all goes unless you specifically ask to keep some for habitat piles or firewood.

Safety & Protection

We protect lawns, paving, flower beds, and other planting while working. Branches are lowered using ropes to avoid damage we don't just drop them. All work is carried out with full public liability insurance (£10 million cover).

TPO & Permission Checks

Before quoting, we check if the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a Conservation Area. If permissions are needed, we'll advise you on the process and can submit applications on your behalf.

Tidy Finish

Sawdust is swept, ground protection removed, and the site left clean. Many customers mention in reviews how surprised they are at how tidy we leave things.

How High Can We Lift?

The maximum safe lifting height depends on the tree's overall height:

  • Trees under 5 metres: lift to around 1.5 metres

  • Trees 5-10 metres: lift to 2-3 metres

  • Trees over 10 metres: lift to 3-5 metres

  • Large mature trees: occasionally higher, but carefully assessed

Lifting too high looks unnatural and weakens the tree by removing too much of its foliage. We'll advise on what's safe and proportionate during the site visit.

How it works

  1. Free Site Visit & Quote

Call or message us with basic details (tree location, what you want to achieve). We'll visit your property to assess the tree, check its health and any protections, discuss your goals, and provide a fixed written quote usually within a few days.

  1. Permissions (If Needed)

If the tree has a TPO or is in a Conservation Area, Submit the application to Harrogate Borough Council. Once approved (typically 6-8 weeks), we'll schedule the work.

  1. Professional Pruning & Tidy Finish

We'll agree a date, arrive on time with the right equipment, complete the crown work safely, remove all waste, and leave your property tidy. Most single-tree jobs are completed in a day.
