When Hedges Need Trimming
Formal Hedges (Box, Yew, Hornbeam, Beech)
Formal hedges need precise trimming 1-2 times per year to maintain crisp lines and dense growth. Box and yew are cut once annually (late summer). Hornbeam and beech benefit from two cuts (mid-summer and early autumn). We use hand shears for detailed work and powered trimmers for larger areas, finishing by eye to ensure level tops and straight sides.
Fast-Growing Hedges (Privet, Leylandii, Laurel)
Privet, leylandii, and laurel grow vigorously and need cutting 2-3 times per year to stay controlled. Left untrimmed, they quickly become overgrown, block light, and encroach on paths or neighbouring properties. Regular cutting keeps them dense, manageable, and within boundaries. We cut these in late spring, mid-summer, and early autumn.
Boundary Hedges
Hedges on boundaries need keeping within your property to avoid disputes with neighbours. Overgrown hedges encroaching onto pavements, driveways, or adjacent gardens create problems. We cut boundary hedges to agreed lines, ensuring sides are vertical or slightly tapered, and tops are level or gently contoured.
Overgrown or Neglected Hedges
Hedges left uncut for several years become tall, wide, and often bare at the base. We bring overgrown hedges back gradually taking 20-30% off in the first year, then repeating annually until the desired size is reached. Cutting back too hard in one go shocks the plants and creates bare patches that take years to recover.
Height Reduction
Hedges that have grown too tall can be reduced, but the approach depends on species. Broadleaf hedges (beech, hornbeam, hawthorn) tolerate hard cutting and will regenerate from old wood. Conifers (leylandii, thuja) won't regenerate from bare wood, we can reduce them slightly but not drastically. We'll advise honestly about what's achievable.
Maintaining Privacy & Screening
Hedges planted for privacy need regular trimming to maintain density without growing too tall. We cut sides to keep growth tight and tops to the height you need for screening, typically 1.8-2 metres for garden privacy. Dense, well-maintained hedges provide better screening than tall, leggy ones.
