What We Do

We provide stump grinding and removal across Harrogate and North Yorkshire, grinding stumps below ground level so you can replant, lay turf, or simply remove trip hazards from gardens and pathways. Stump grinding uses specialist machinery to chip away the stump and major roots, reducing everything to wood chips that are removed from site.

After a tree is felled, you're left with a stump that won't rot naturally for years. Grinding is the fastest and most effective way to remove it completely. We grind stumps to depths suitable for replanting (typically 30-40cm below ground) or cut flush with the ground if it's out of the way.

Our grinding equipment handles stumps of any size, from small ornamental trees to large mature oaks and conifers. We work in tight access gardens, near buildings and fences, and on sloped or difficult terrain. All wood chips are removed unless you'd like them for mulch, and the area is backfilled with topsoil if requested.

City & Guilds NPTC qualified with specialist stump grinding equipment we complete most jobs in a few hours and leave sites clean.

When You Need Stump Grinding

After Tree Removal

When a tree is felled, the stump remains. Left untreated, it takes 7-10 years to rot naturally, creates trip hazards, attracts pests, and prevents use of that ground. Grinding removes the problem in hours rather than years.

Before Replanting

You can't plant a new tree directly over an old stump the remaining roots interfere with new growth and the decaying wood affects soil quality. Grinding clears the area properly for replanting.

Before Lawn or Patio Installation

Stumps prevent proper leveling and create weak spots in lawns or paving. Grinding them below surface level allows grass to grow over the area or enables flat, stable bases for patios and driveways.

Clearing Overgrown Gardens

Inherited multiple old stumps from previous tree removals? We can grind them all in one visit, clearing the ground properly for landscaping or planting.

Removing Trip Hazards

Raised stumps and surface roots create trip risks, particularly near paths, driveways, or play areas. Grinding removes the hazard completely.

Preparing for Building Work

Extensions, outbuildings, or groundworks often require stump removal from the construction footprint.

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Stump Grinding (Recommended)

Grinding uses a specialist machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip away the stump and surface roots. We grind to 30-40cm below ground level (deep enough for replanting) or flush with the surface if you're not replanting. The entire stump is reduced to wood chips, which are removed from site. Quick, effective, and suitable for 95% of situations.

Full Stump Removal (Rare)

Complete removal means digging out the entire stump and root ball. This requires heavy machinery (mini digger or excavator), leaves a large hole to backfill, and takes significantly longer. It's only needed when building work requires complete root clearance or when grinding isn't possible due to access. For most garden situations, grinding is faster, cheaper, and less disruptive.

We recommend grinding for almost all residential jobs. If you need full root ball removal for construction or development work, we can arrange that too just mention it when requesting a quote.

What's Included in Our Service

Site Assessment

We visit to assess the stump size, location, and access. We'll measure the diameter, check what's nearby (fences, buildings, utilities), and plan the grinding approach.

Complete Grinding

Stumps are ground to the depth you need typically 30-40cm below surface for replanting, or flush with the ground if it's under a patio or out of the way. All major surface roots are also ground away.

Wood Chip Removal

All wood chips are removed from site and taken to licensed facilities unless you ask to keep them for garden mulch or paths. We don't leave piles of chips "to deal with later."

Site Backfilling (Optional)

If you're replanting or laying turf, we can backfill the ground cavity with topsoil, leaving it level and ready. This is quoted separately as it requires soil delivery and handling.

Tidy Finish

Sawdust is cleared, surrounding areas are swept, and your property is left clean. It's standard, not an extra.
