What We Do

We assess the tree's condition, height, lean, and surrounding obstacles before choosing the safest method. Straight felling drops the whole tree in one controlled direction where space allows. Sectional dismantling involves climbing the tree and removing it piece by piece, lowering each section by rope to avoid damage to gardens, buildings, or fences below.

All work is carried out by our City & Guilds NPTC qualified team of arborists with full training in tree climbing and chainsaw operation. We handle all waste professionally, chipping brash on site where possible, cutting timber into manageable logs, and taking everything to licensed disposal facilities with full documentation.

Whether you need a dangerous tree removed after storm damage, a dead conifer cleared to make space for replanting, or a large oak felled to prepare a site for development, we adapt our approach to your property and priorities.

Why Choose T. Howie Tree Specialist

City & Guilds NPTC Qualified

Our team holds full City & Guilds NPTC qualifications in tree climbing, chainsaw use, rigging, and aerial rescue. We work to BS3998, the British Standard for tree work ensuring every removal is planned, executed, and documented to professional standards. Safety is never compromised.

Over 15 Years' Local Experience

Based in Harrogate since 2012 and being the highest rated, we've safely removed hundreds of trees across residential gardens, estates, and commercial sites. We understand local tree species; oak, ash, beech, birch, conifers, and how different conditions (lean, decay, location) affect removal methods.

Full Insurance

We carry comprehensive public liability insurance covering £10 million. All waste is handled legally, timber and brash are taken to licensed facilities, and we provide waste transfer documentation as required. No fly-tipping, no shortcuts.

When You Might Need Tree Removal

Dead or Dying Trees

Dead trees become brittle and unpredictable, branches drop unexpectedly, and the whole tree can collapse. Ash dieback has killed millions of ash trees across the UK, and diseased trees often need complete removal to prevent spread and eliminate hazards. Early removal is safer and cheaper than emergency work after failure.

Trees Too Close to Buildings

When trees are planted too close to houses or sheds, roots can affect foundations and branches can damage roofs, gutters, or windows. Sometimes the tree just outgrows its spot. If crown reduction won't solve it, removal is the safest option.

Blocking Light or Views

Large trees near buildings can block sunlight, making gardens dark and damp. Overgrown specimens prevent other plants growing and reduce property value. If you're planning an extension, new driveway, or landscaping project, trees may need removing to clear the site.

Wrong Species or Location

Leylandii hedges that have grown into 20-metre trees, self-seeded sycamores in the wrong place, or conifers blocking views -sometimes a tree just doesn't belong. Removal creates space for better planting choices or opens up your garden.

Storm Damage

High winds can uproot trees, snap trunks, or leave them leaning dangerously. We offer emergency callouts for storm-damaged trees posing immediate risk, available 24/7.

Permissions & Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Permissions & Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Some trees in are protected by Tree Preservation Orders, and any tree in a Conservation Area requires permission before removal, even if there's no TPO. Felling a protected tree without permission can lead to fines up to £20,000.

Before we quote for any tree work, we check the local authority register for TPOs and Conservation Area boundaries. If your tree is protected, we'll advise on the process, help with the application, and wait for approval before starting work (usually 6-8 weeks from submission).

What's Included in Our Tree Removal Service

Site Assessment & Risk Planning

We'll visit your property to assess the tree, measure its height and spread, check what's nearby (buildings, fences, powerlines, other planting), and plan the safest dismantling method.

Sectional Dismantling

Trees are cut down piece by piece from the top, with each section lowered safely using ropes. This protects surrounding structures, lawns, and plants. For larger sections, we may use a cherry picker for better control.

Complete Waste Removal

All timber, branches, and brash are removed from site and taken. We don't leave piles of wood "to deal with later", it all goes unless you ask us to leave logs.

Tree Felling Techniques We Use

Where space allows, we fell the whole tree in one controlled drop fastest and most cost-effective. In confined spaces near buildings or boundaries, we climb and dismantle section by section, lowering each piece by rope. Complex removals near property require advanced rigging systems to control heavy sections and prevent damage. After felling, stumps can be ground below ground level, cut flush, or left in place stump grinding is quoted separately as it requires specialist equipment.

Straight felling – open ground, controlled drop, processed on site

Sectional dismantling – confined spaces, climbed and lowered by rope

Rigging systems – near buildings, prevents damage to property

Stump removal – grinding, flush cut, or left in place (quoted separately)

The selected method is based on your site, not what's easiest for us
