Hedge planting and installation involves selecting the right species, preparing the ground properly, planting at correct spacing and depth, and providing establishment care to ensure healthy, dense growth. We install native hedges for wildlife, formal hedges for structure, evergreen hedges for year-round screening, and mixed species hedges for visual interest advising on the best choice for your property, soil, and purpose.
Proper hedge planting starts with site assessment: checking soil type, drainage, sunlight, and exposure. We source quality British-grown plants bare-root for autumn/winter planting (November-March) or container-grown for year-round installation. Plants are spaced correctly for the species and hedge style, typically 30-45cm apart in a single row or double staggered rows for faster establishment.
Ground preparation is essential. We clear existing vegetation, dig planting trenches or pits, improve drainage if needed, and add compost or organic matter. Plants are set at the correct depth with roots spread naturally, firmed in well, and watered thoroughly. Mulch is applied to suppress weeds and retain moisture during the critical establishment period.

Why Choose T. Howie Tree Specialist

Over 15 Years' Local Experience
Based in Harrogate since 2012, we've planted hundreds of hedges across residential gardens, estates, and commercial sites throughout North Yorkshire. We understand local soil conditions, which species thrive in it’s climate, and how different exposures affect growth. That knowledge means hedges that establish quickly and flourish long-term.

Expert Species Selection
We advise honestly about what will work. Fast-growing leylandii for quick screening, beech for formal structure, native hawthorn and field maple for wildlife, laurel for evergreen coverage, or mixed species for year-round interest. We match species to your soil, sunlight, budget, and purpose not just what's fashionable.

Proper Ground Preparation
Poor planting kills hedges. We prepare ground thoroughly clearing weeds, digging proper trenches, improving drainage, adding compost. Plants are set at correct depth, roots spread naturally, firmed well, and watered in. The difference shows in establishment success.
When to Plant Hedges
The best time for most hedge planting. Bare-root plants are lifted from nursery fields during dormancy, transplanted while dormant, and establish roots before spring growth. Far cheaper than container-grown (typically half the cost), wider species choice, better root systems. Planting season: early November through late March. Avoid frozen ground or waterlogged conditions. This is when we plant most hedges.
Dormant plants aren't actively growing, so transplant shock is minimal. Roots establish during winter, ready to support vigorous spring growth. Bare-root plants develop better root architecture than pot-bound container plants. The only downside is limited planting window outside November-March, you need container-grown stock.
Container-grown or pot-grown plants can be planted any time, though spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are still best. Avoid planting in summer drought or winter frozen ground unless essential. More expensive than bare-root, smaller plant sizes available, but gives flexibility for year-round installation. We use container-grown for:
Planting outside bare-root season
Evergreens like laurel that establish better from pots
Larger specimen plants for instant impact
Projects where timing is fixed (e.g., construction deadlines)
Large specimens (1.5-2m+) often come root-balled—dug with a soil ball around roots, wrapped in hessian. Planted autumn through spring while dormant or semi-dormant. More expensive than bare-root, less than instant hedge. Good for larger beech, hornbeam, yew where you want faster establishment than bare-root but can't justify instant hedge costs.
Pre-grown hedge sections, typically 1.2-2m tall in troughs, providing instant screening on installation. We can source and install instant hedges when budget allows and instant screening is essential. For most projects, we recommend standard planting for better value and long-term establishment.

Hedge Planting Costs

Hedge planting costs depend on species, plant size, hedge length, ground conditions, and installation method. We provide fixed written quotes after visiting. Here's what affects cost:
Species & plant type: Bare-root (Nov–Mar) is the cheapest with the widest choice; container-grown works year-round but costs more; root-balled gives instant structure with larger plants (often 1.2–2m+).
Hedge length: Longer runs usually cost less per metre because setup, equipment, and waste removal are similar regardless of length.
Ground preparation: Clear, level, well-drained ground is quickest; clay, slopes, roots, or old stumps increase prep time and cost.
Access & constraints: Good vehicle access keeps labour down; restricted access (rear gardens, steep banks, tight routes) increases labour time.
Access & constraints: Good vehicle access keeps labour down; restricted access (rear gardens, steep banks, tight routes) increases labour time.
Installation complexity: Straight lines on flat ground are fastest; curves, level changes, obstacles, or intricate spacing slow the install and increase cost.
How it works
Free Site Visit & Quote
Call or message us with basic details. We'll arrange a visit to assess the tree, check for hazards, measure access, and discuss your priorities. We'll explain our recommended removal method and provide a detailed written quote within a few days.
