What We Do

We provide seasonal pruning and garden tidy-up services across Harrogate and North Yorkshire, maintaining roses, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental plants through spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Seasonal pruning means cutting back plants at the right time to encourage healthy growth, flowering, and structure different plants need pruning at different times, and we work to those natural rhythms.

Spring work includes cutting back perennials, deadheading early bulbs, and light shrub shaping. Summer maintenance covers deadheading roses, cutting back spent blooms, and border tidying. Autumn brings pruning climbing roses, cutting back herbaceous perennials, and clearing fallen leaves. Winter allows structural pruning of deciduous shrubs and preparing beds for spring growth.

All garden waste is removed and taken to licensed facilities. We work carefully around established planting, protect spring bulbs during autumn clearance, and leave borders tidy without over-cutting. This is garden maintenance pruning roses, shrubs, perennials, ornamentals not tree work (we cover that separately) and not full hedge cutting (also separate).

Experienced team, proper timing, tidy finish.

Why Choose T. Howie Tree Specialist

Experienced. Knowledgeable. Tidy.

Over 15 Years' Local Experience - Based in Harrogate since 2012, we've maintained hundreds of gardens across North Yorkshire. We understand local plants, what thrives in Harrogate's climate, and when to prune for best results.

We know when to prune roses (February/March and August), when to cut back perennials (spring or autumn depending on type), and which shrubs benefit from winter structural work vs summer shaping. That knowledge protects your plants and improves performance.

Complete Tidy-Up Service – All prunings, clippings, and garden waste removed from site and taken to licensed facilities. Borders swept, paths cleared, surrounding plants protected. Tidy finish as standard.

When Gardens Need Seasonal Pruning

Spring Pruning (March-April)

Spring Pruning (March-April)

The first garden tidy-up of the year. We cut back winter-damaged growth on shrubs, prune roses to encourage strong flowering, trim early-flowering shrubs after bloom (forsythia, flowering currant), and cut herbaceous perennials back to ground level if not done in autumn. Spring deadheading keeps early bulbs tidy without removing foliage needed for next year's growth.

Summer Maintenance (June-August)

Summer Maintenance (June-August)

Keeping gardens tidy through the growing season. Deadheading roses encourages repeat flowering, removing spent blooms on perennials prolongs display, and light pruning of fast-growing shrubs (lavender, potentilla) maintains shape. We also clear early leaf fall and tidy borders between main seasonal cuts.

Autumn Pruning (September-November)

Autumn Pruning (September-November)

Preparing gardens for winter. Cutting back herbaceous perennials (or leaving structural ones standing for winter interest), pruning climbing roses and ramblers after flowering, clearing fallen leaves from borders and lawns, and tidying summer bedding. Autumn is also good for light reduction pruning on overgrown shrubs that need bringing back into shape.

Winter Work (December-February)

Winter Work (December-February)

Structural pruning when plants are dormant. Deciduous shrubs (buddleia, hydrangea, philadelphus) are pruned to framework, borders are cleared if left through autumn, and established roses get main annual prune. Winter work is easier to see structure clearly without leaves, and plants respond vigorously to spring growth after winter cutting.

What's Included in Our Service

Garden Assessment

Garden Assessment

We visit to see what you've got roses needing annual pruning, perennials ready for cutting back, shrubs requiring shaping, borders needing tidying. We'll discuss timing (some plants prefer spring cutting, others autumn) and agree on the approach.

Proper Pruning Techniques

Proper Pruning Techniques

Roses are pruned to outward-facing buds at the correct angle. Shrubs are shaped to maintain natural form while controlling size. Perennials are cut back without damaging crowns. We know the difference between plants that tolerate hard cutting and those that need lighter touch.

Deadheading & Spent Bloom Removal

Deadheading & Spent Bloom Removal

Regular deadheading through summer encourages repeat flowering on roses, prevents perennials setting seed and stopping flower production, and keeps borders looking tidy. We remove spent blooms cleanly without damaging stems or buds below.

Border Tidying & Leaf Clearing

Border Tidying & Leaf Clearing

Fallen leaves are cleared from borders and lawns (left to rot, they smother plants and create slug habitats). Garden debris, prunings, and cleared material are all removed. Borders are left tidy, weed-free where possible, and ready for the next season.

Light Hedge Trimming

Light Hedge Trimming

As part of seasonal maintenance, we can tidy garden hedges (privet, box, small laurel sections) with hand shears or light powered trimmers. This is light maintenance work only full hedge cutting services are covered separately.

Complete Waste Removal

Complete Waste Removal

All prunings, clippings, leaves, and garden waste removed from site and taken to licensed green waste facilities. We don't leave piles "for composting" unless specifically requested. Your garden is left clean and tidy.

Seasonal Pruning Costs

Seasonal pruning and garden tidy-up costs vary based on garden size, amount of work, plant types, and frequency. We provide fixed written quotes after visiting. Here's what affects cost:

Garden size & plant density: Bigger gardens with more beds and borders take longer, so they cost more than smaller, simpler gardens.

Type & number of plants: Labour-heavy planting (roses, large borders, lots of shrubs, climbers, big perennials) adds time and increases cost.

Season & timing: Spring and autumn are busiest, so peak-season work can cost slightly more; regular visits (2–4 per year) are usually better value than a once-a-year tidy-up.

Current condition: Well-kept gardens need routine pruning, while overgrown or neglected areas take longer due to heavier cut-backs and clearance.

Access & site constraints: Easy access and working space keeps labour down; rear access through the house, slopes, or delicate planting increases time and care needed.

Waste volume: More cuttings means more disposal costs; we remove all waste unless you want to keep some for composting.

How it works

  1. Free Site Visit & Quote

Call or message us with basic details. We'll arrange a visit to assess the tree, check for hazards, measure access, and discuss your priorities. We'll explain our recommended removal method and provide a detailed written quote within a few days.

  1. Permissions (If Needed)

We check whether your tree has a Tree Preservation Order or if you're in a Conservation Area requiring council permission. If permissions are needed, we can help with applications or advise on the process.

  1. Safe Removal & Tidy Finish

We arrive on time with the right equipment for the job. The tree is removed using the agreed method, felling, sectional dismantling, or crane-assisted. All brash is chipped, timber is processed, stumps are ground if requested, and your property is left clean and tidy.
