The Arborist’s Guide: 10 Critical Tree Safety and Health Fixes

From leaning trunks and invasive pests to storm damage, keeping your canopy safe requires a proactive eye and the right technique.

Heavy Lean After Storms

Soil saturation and high winds can cause a tree to "heave," lifting the root plate. The Fix: If the lean is sudden and the soil is cracked, this is a hazard. For small saplings, you can gently straighten and stake them; however, for mature trees, immediate bracing or professional removal is required to prevent a fall.

Co-Dominant Stems (The "V" Crotch)

When a tree grows two main trunks of equal size, the union point is structurally weak and prone to splitting. The Fix: To reduce the risk of the tree tearing in half, perform "reduction pruning" on one side to encourage the other to become the dominant leader. For large trees, installing a high-strength cable system can provide mechanical support.

Pest Infestations (Aphids & Scale)

Sticky residue on your car or yellowing leaves often point to sap-sucking insects. The Fix: Blast the underside of leaves with a high-pressure garden hose to dislodge the pests. For persistent issues, apply organic neem oil or insecticidal soap during the cooler evening hours to avoid scorching the foliage.
