How to Solve 10 Common Tree Care Challenges

Tree health issues can sneak up on any property owner—from dying branches and fungal infections to structural instability after a storm.

Dead or Hanging Branches (Widowmakers)

Deadwood is often caused by lack of sunlight, pest damage, or natural aging. The Fix: Using sterilized pruning shears or a pole saw, make a clean cut at the branch collar (the swelling where the branch meets the trunk). Avoid "flush cuts" to ensure the tree can seal the wound properly.

Fungal Leaf Spots

Usually identified by brown or black spots on foliage, this is often the result of poor air circulation and excess moisture. The Fix: Rake up and dispose of fallen leaves to prevent spores from overwintering. Thin out the inner canopy to increase airflow and sunlight penetration.

Girdling Roots

Roots that wrap around the base of the trunk can eventually "strangle" the tree, cutting off nutrient flow. The Fix: Carefully excavate the soil around the root flare. If the girdling root is small, it can be pruned away; however, if it’s large and structural, consult an arborist to avoid destabilizing the tree.

Arborist Note: Always check for local nesting birds or protected species before starting any major pruning work. Safety gear, including a helmet and eye protection, is non-negotiable!
